target audience analysis

What's an audience? - a group who consume the finished product of media and who are active post production. They determine the success of a product, in this case a music video.

What's a target audience? - a group who you aim the product to be sold to, with certain characteristics for enjoying the product and making profit. e.g. a pop music video will appeal to younger more hip audiences. Target audience should be established pre-production in order to design the product for them to avoid money loss.

Common Audience categories according to Genres-

Rock- men, aged averagely 30, predominantly white, semi skilled workers

Punk/Emo- men and women aged on average 13-19, predominantly white, unemployed students or casual workers

Classical- males and females, aged 40+, predominantly white, top management jobs

Pop- females aged 11-25, mixed ethnicities, students or semi-skilled workers

hip-hop/rap/RnB- males and females aged 13-30, mixed ethnic background, students, skilled workers, unemployed

Reactions within an audience-

Audience engagement- the way a consumer interacts with the media as an active or passive consumer

Audience expectations- their ideas and expectations for the product

Audience foreknowledge- the information the audience has for the product, from adverts or previews

Audience identification- the way the consumers react to a product, through experience, identifying with the media and feeling connected to it

Audience placement- producers utilising polysemy techniques to sell the product in a significant way to each individual

Audience research- to measure success or find a more detailed target audience, audiences are monitored throughout distribution

The song 'Location' targets teenagers that use social media as a social barrier when they are communicating in relationships. Khalid expresses how it frustrated him speaking so much with a girl online and how he just wanted her to send her location so he could see her in person. My music video will also be targeted at teens my age.

My questionnaire, I gave it to 30 people in my school year to fill out and here are my results.

Question 1-
I asked what types of video are people's favourite to view, and my results came back as mostly narrative because they preferred a video with a storyline that is relatable to them and helps them connect with the lyrics and the artist. Therefore I will film a fairly narrative storyline.

Question 2-
I asked how people access music videos, and Youtube came most popular, with social media not far behind. In my opinion social media is the fastest, cheapest and most effective way to promote artists' music. After these results, I will be posting my video on youtube.

Question 3-
My audience voted rock the least enjoyable, probably because that genre of music is not on trend these days, pop and hip-hop were in the lead. I will be filming a video to a pop song.

Question 4-
Close ups and Establishing shots were voted most popular, so I am going to take that into consideration when shooting my own music video.

Question 5-
Storyline and video setting came up as most popular, with mise en scene closely behind. When i create my own video, I will draw a lot of attention to creating a clear story/message and showing my setting with establishing shots.
