- 1926-27- The talkies. These were the 1st musical short films featuring many bands, dancers and vocalists. The 1st feature film presented as a talkie was "the jazz singer" in Oct 1927.
- 1930's/1940's- Cartoon films were made that encouraged audiences to sing along. Early animated films by Walt Disney were made, including 'Fantasia' that featured classical pieces.
- 1940's- Another form of early music video were 1 song films called Soundies made for the panoram visual jukebox, mostly of Jazz musicians.
- 1956- Television. The rise of pop music was tied with the rise of tv as the format exposed new up and coming stars.
- 1957- Elvis Presley- 'Jailhouse Rock' was released with a motion picture of it.
- 1964-1965- The Beatles. The band set the stage for modern music videos with 'A hard day's night". In 1965 they made 10 "films" that promoted their album release.
- 1981- MTV. 24 hour tv broadcast meant music videos began to become central in music marketing by the mid 80's. The first video played was The Buggles, Video killed the radio star.
- 1983- Thriller. MJ's most successful video of all time was released, starting a major theme of entertainment.
- 1990's- The rise of the director. Music videos began to be directed like films, starting marketing purposes to their creation.
- 2005- YouTube: web 2.0. This allowed people to watch and discuss videos online.
- 2005- iTunes. This allowed for sales of music videos via the internet. iTunes hit 1 million downloads after just 20 days.
- 2006 and onwards- Streaming sites such as Napster and Spotify, Deezer and soundcloud take over digital music consuming.
