It is a portrait album cover making the artist the main focus, her makeup and hair is red, matching the imagery in her music video only girl,
The fact that the artist's name does not appear on the album cover suggests she is already very popular and universally know, connoting fame and power. Her eyes being closed instead of directly addressing the audience suggets mystery.
The back cover of the album is quite a bit softer, with only red writing and Rihanna in a softer, more timid pose, which may appeal to young women which is her main target audience. She is looking down and covering half her face with her hair.
