My favourite music video director is Hype Williams.
He is a 46 year old American music video director, film director, producer and screenwriter who has been active since 1991.
He won the Jackson Limo Award for Best Rap Video of the Year (1996) for Busta Rhymes' "Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check"
Some of his signature styles are using a fisheye lens, placing shots in widescreen ratio while a second shot is split and placed above and below it and more recently, focusing on the artist's upper body and having a solid colour in the background.
Those are his main 3 style traits but a few others include slow motion action, deep focus (when foreground and background are in focus) and smooth cuts.
These are some of my favourite music videos that he has directed.
1. Travis Scott- 90210 (2017) https://youtu.be/BuNBLjJzRoo
This whole video is stop motion, made with plastic dolls that resemble Travis, dancing. I think this idea is genius and works really well with the song.
2. Beyonce ft. Jay Z- Drunk in love (2013) https://youtu.be/p1JPKLa-Ofc
This amazing single recorded by Beyonce and her husband was basically a sequel to her "Crazy in love" from 10 years earlier. It was recorded in total black and white which is a dated technique but really works with this song and is one of my personal favourite videos of all time.
3. Brandy ft. Chris Brown- Put it down (2011) https://youtu.be/E5svXAZ9-Qk
The styles he used in this video was medium wide shots with shallow focus of the individual artists and full wide shots as shown above.
Another director who is heavily influencing the way i'm filming my music video is Hiro Murai.
His music video that he directed for Childish Gambino is my favourite because it seems to be shot continuously but actually, he just found really smart ways of cutting between scenes. I want to use this technique of moving the camera towards my clothing or a shadow and then moving it away again to start a new scene, I want my parts in my video to seem like they are continuous when they're not.
The second music video director inspiring me is Colin Tilley.
Colin Tilley is 29, he has been nominated with a Grammy and he's worked with so many of my favourite artists including Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown, 50 Cent and Future.
He also directed the iconic "glosses" commercial for Kylie Jenner.
Here are a few of his best music videos, which all encompass a fair amount of performance.
1. Wild thoughts- Rihanna
2. Anaconda- Nicki Minaj
The third music video director who has made some videos i really admire, usually with mid shots and close ups throughout, is Mark Romanek.
1. "99 problems" - Jay Z
2. "Scream" Janet and Michael Jackson
3. "Rain" Madonna
